If you couldn’t already tell, I’ve been doing a lot of vintage shopping lately. I suppose that quarantine does that and I’m certain that I’m not alone in my quest for excitement via packages in the mail. It’s something to look forward to when other things are out of the question, so I’ve spent a lot of time curating a new wardrobe on a limited budget.
This sweater was one of my recent finds and it’s from a shop called Endless Rodeo Vintage on Etsy, and I’m really impressed with the quality as well as the look of it. I love me some varsity stripes, and I’m really into chunky cotton sweaters for their durability and resistance to pilling.
Too many times I’ve invested in a wool sweater only to have it pill and look ratty within a few months. Sweater shavers aren’t a viable option (if you shave a pilled spot, a hole will eventually form in that spot after repeated shaving) so I’ve been researching alternative options to make my clothes last the longest possible.
But back to the sweater. If you’re looking for quality basics, or unique items, I highly suggest turning to vintage before you hit the high street. Vintage clothes are often still very wearable (with some exceptions) and usually cost a lot less than buying new (with some exceptions). They’re better for the environment as well, so if you’re looking to shop sustainably, vintage is a great way to go.
I’m always on the hunt for things that make me look like a cheerleader from a 50s film, or like I own a yacht. This sweater ticked both of those boxes, and at a beyond reasonable $60 CAD for a 100% cotton sweater with no apparent flaws, I bought it and eagerly waited.
I’m styling it here with cuffed jeans and I like that I can roll the sleeves as well as wear them full length. I find that when I wear a sweater with the sleeves full length, it can give a bit of a shapeless look that closely resembles a penguin. This sweater has that cute, oversized (but not too much) grandfather’s-hand-me-downs look to it, but I can see it worn with a short black skirt for a more chic, put-together look, or even brown or navy trousers with a thin belt.
I’ve styled it with my vintage (fun new drinking game: take a shot every time this blog mentions the word vintage) gold Figaro 6.5mm chain and a pair of the Curvy Cheeky Straight Jean from Everlane. Not pictured are a pair of now sold out Sportscraft white sneakers (similar ones can be found at Sezane and Everlane).
Until next time,
